I read parts of it on Amazon online before committing to buy it. I have to admit that when I saw almost an entire page devoted to describing the different kinds of kitten poo and what they mean, I broke down and bought it. That's my kind of book!- It's written in a friendly, easy to read, down to earth style.- The questions she asks about whether or not you really want a kitten are excellent and should be required reading for anyone who wants a kitten (or thinks they want a kitten)- She mentions pediatric spay/neuter, which is great and a way to ensure no unwanted kittens are born- Although, she does recommend not taking a kitten home before 12 weeks, personally I believe some good socialization with their new humans happens from 8-14 weeks. I agree that you definitely don't want to get a kitten any younger than 8 weeks old.- The illustration on how to tell boy kittens from girl kittens is particularly useful. It can be hard to tell, even for vets.- I had no idea "moggie" meant "mixed breed". Neat!- I disagree with her opinion on avoiding adopting "shy" kittens. Certain kittens and cats need to warm up to people, some love everyone, but since you're going to be owning them for their whole lives, that shy cat will become your friend very soon, and may be more affectionate (with its preferred people) than the cat that seems to be outgoing with everyone.- Her instructions on how to pill a cat are spot on.- She includes a section on how to read cat language that would be useful for all cat owners.- There is lots of good information on kitten-proofing your home.- The section on orphan kittens is excellent, although she again errs on the side of caution when recommending how often you have to feed and clean them. Understandable, but it probably scares a lot of people away from fostering. Honestly, once they're ten days old, three times a day is fine.I would recommend this book to all cat owners, especially to read BEFORE they get a kitten. It was fun to read as well as a great resource! Kittens aren't as simple a business as picking one out of the litter, taking it home, and living happily ever after.I had previous experience with an older cat I rescued from the local animal shelter, but lessons learned with Louie, the older cat, didn't cover little details like how to assure kitties used the litter boxes provided or what clues kitties give that tell you it's time to take them to the veterinarian.KITTENS FOR DUMMIES helps fill in those gaps in your cat knowledge, making it worth the money the first time you DON'T have to clean up[ a poopy mess outside a litter box because you understand that the little rascal might not use it if he's sharing it with another kitten, as is the case at my home now as I have two Persian kittens to replace the late Louie. Solution: one litter box per cat plus one.The book is a great first book, a basic text on how to raise your kitten, or, if you are especially hardcore, kittens. Tips I used worked. The book is an easy read, in fact is a book you'll most likely read through in one sitting.
